Build a solid foundation in Layers, Masks, and Modes. You’ll learn how these powerful imaging editing tools affect the image and how to use them to create composite images, colorized images, and how to create dramatic special effects.
Learn Layers in Photoshop (or any image editing program that supports layers) and you’ll acquire one of the most critical skills you need for effective image editing. When you want to correct exposure or modify color or contrast in an image, skilled use of layers is the way to make that happen. Layers also give you precise control when adding text, combining multiple images to create composites, and even for application of striking colorization effects to a black and white image.
Use Masks with multi-layered images to hide or reveal parts of an image. Understanding how masks work with layers is critical to using layers successfully and you will learn how to use this tool like a pro.
Master the Modes functions to change the way layers in an image interact with each other. Modes can dramatically change the effect of layers and masks. Some modes will render blacks in an image completely invisible, while others render whites invisible, and others will let you add color to an image without covering up the underlying detail.
Prerequisite: Experience with Photoshop selection tools or completion of Photoshop Power Tools Part 1: Selection Tools.
